Rutabaga The Adventure Chef : Book 2 : Feasts of Fury
(Ages 7 to 11) - Graphic Novel
By : Eric Colossal
Publisher : Amulet Books (May.,2016)
Rutabaga, the almost bald headed wonder chef is on another adventure tour, to the Kingdom of Evanore. And as usual travelling on his side is his pet, walking but not talking, cauldron. This is the second in line of a humorous graphic series about the chef Rutabaga and his missions in search of mysterious ingredients for his special receipes. He faces many surprises along his journey.
A laugh-out-loud, action packed comic with colourful graphics. The simple format of the novel, with speech bubbles and sound effects, but with less captions is especially helpful for younger kids. And this sixty six page story is divided into several chapters. Images with figures full of expressions ensure clarity.
Themed in a Medieval setting; on his way he meets some bloodthirsty spiders, a female thief who claims to be the fiercest and the most cunning thief ever lived, and is held by a gang of Goblin like 'Gublins'. However, his marvelous feasts always come in handy and saves his day.Step by step instructions for some of these simple yet glorious dishes, such as the ``Sunken Treasure Oyster,`` ``King`s Crown with fruit jewels`` cooked with a pork loin, cherries & pears and ``The bubbling bog fondue`` made with stinky cheese, fish sauce, garlic and lemon juice are made available along with the story; three more simple recipes with instructions can be found at the end of the book.
This is a book for foodies, adventure lovers, fantasy lovers and comic fans. But also recommended for reluctant readers. Rutabaga is a hero who saves a kingdom with his powers of cooking and proves that "even a Goof can be a hero"
This being a graphic novel, I decided to let my nine year-old son read it first; laughing out loud and munching some chips, he did enjoy it, and read it in one breath, In the end I received the feed back "This is so cool can you buy me this and the first one also please..." Bon apetit !!
With many thanks to Amulet Books and NetGalley for the ARC copy in return for an honest review.
