First Snow ( Ages 2 to 4)
By : Peter McCarty

After having our first snowfall of the season, just a few days ago, this book seems like the perfect choice of reviewing.
"It`s a day of firsts for Pedro,
First snow fall, first snow angel ,
First taste of a snowflake...."
The "first" thing that captivated me were the images of this book. Pedro is visiting his cousins Sancho and his siblings from a far away non-snowy land.
At the beginning Pedro refuses to go out or to see the snow,.but later due to eager requests of his cousins he gets to experience snow; together with his cousins he enjoyed. Fun filled activities a child could do in the snow as well as simple facts about snow are explained in the form of a tale through Pedro and his cousins.
Plain simple text without any eloquence makes it very much suitable for younger kids from 2+; as it`s easy to grasp the wonders of snow through these very enjoyable activities they do in the snow.
But it lacks the decorative literary descriptions that would emphasise the awe, fascination and the wonders of a child who would get to see the snow for the first time.
My eldest missed the snow for the past two and half years and my youngest is seeing it for the first time: their pure joy of the sight of the first snowfall was obvious - they were dancing in the snow!
I feel that the characters were used to explain the setting or maybe a concept in this context. However I recommend this as an ideal way to start up a discussion about the subject.
